Devikulam Hills
Devikulam, a serene hill station, less than 10 kilometres away from the better-known Munnar, called the ‘Kashmir of South India’ is a great get-away that combines the natural beauty of the majestic Western Ghats with that of rolling tea gardens, religious significance and tranquility.Â
Devikulam, which means Lake of the Goddess, situated at an elevation of 1,800 meters above sea level, gets its name from the legend that Goddess Sita, wife of Lord Rama, bathed in its waters endowing it with healing properties. Thousands of Hindu devotees visit this pilgrimage centre throughout the year.
Not all serenity and spirituality!
For those of you wanting more, there are also other experiences like trout fishing in the lake, learning about tea cultivation through guided tours at the Devikulam tea estate, boating, wildlife tours of nearby parks like the Idukki National Park and the Eravikulam National Park, visits to well-known lakes (Kundala Lake and Mettupetty Lake) and waterfalls (Pallivasal Falls, Thoovanam Falls) close by. The Blossom International Park nearby is popular with kids for its exciting recreational facilities. (Please note that prior permission from Tata Tea is required in order to visit the lake or catch the fresh water fish.)
The best time to visit Devikulam is during the winter months from October to February when the hill station is enveloped in beautiful mist and fog. The gum trees in red and blue, glorious in the flowering seasons, are one of the other major highlights of the natural vegetation at Devikulam.
