Vavar Mosque also known as Nainar Mosque, is a unique religious site located in Erumeli, Kerala, about 45 kilometers from the Sabarimala Temple. This mosque is dedicated to Vavar, a close companion of Lord Ayyappa, the deity of the Sabarimala temple. What makes this mosque particularly special is its significance in the Hindu pilgrimage tradition, where devotees of Lord Ayyappa customarily visit and worship here before beginning their trek to Sabarimala.
Kerala is renowned for its communal harmony, and Vavar mosque stands as a testament to this spirit of unity. During the Sabarimala pilgrimage season, the mosque becomes a focal point for thousands of Ayyappa devotees, who visit to seek blessings and offer prayers. The mosque is steeped in legends that highlight Vavar’s unwavering friendship with Lord Ayyappa. Vavar is variously described as an Arab pirate, a Muslim saint, or a figure from the Pandya kingdom, but his close bond with Ayyappa is universally acknowledged.
The mosque, believed to have a history of over 500 years, is situated between the Valiyambalam and Cheriyambalam temples. The Chandanakudam procession and the ritualistic Pettathullal dance are key events during the pilgrimage season, symbolizing the victory of good over evil. These events attract not only devotees but also tourists who come to witness the vibrant display of communal unity. During the Pettathullal, devotees, covered in colors, dance in a celebratory procession from Cheriyambalam to Vavar mosque.
Architecturally, the mosque is imposing with its large domes and numerous minarets. Inside, it is simple yet significant, featuring a stone slab with inscriptions instead of a statue, and the walls adorned with green silk cloth. A sword, believed to have belonged to Vavar, symbolizes his valor. The Kerala Tourism Department has listed Vavar mosque as one of the state's most important religious centers, highlighting its role in promoting interfaith harmony.
Many legends surround Vavar's identity, depicting him as an Arab pirate, a Muslim saint, a foreigner from Syria, or a member of the Pandya kingdom. Despite the varying stories, what remains indisputable is his friendship with Lord Ayyappa. According to the myth, Lord Ayyappa appeared in the dream of a local king, instructing him to build a mosque in Vavar’s honor. Today, the Vavar Mosque remains a symbol of true friendship and communal amity, attracting devotees from various faiths who come to pay their respects before continuing their pilgrimage to Sabarimala.
