Krishnankutty Pulavar Memorial
The Krishnankutty Pulavar Memorial, located in Koonathara near Shoranur in Palakkad district, Kerala, is a significant center dedicated to the ancient art of Tholpava Koothu, or shadow puppetry. This traditional art form, deeply rooted in Kerala's cultural heritage, is performed using intricately crafted leather puppets, known as Tholpavas, which are animated against a backlit screen to depict stories, particularly from Hindu mythology. Tholpava Koothu is traditionally associated with the worship of Goddess Bhagavathi and is performed in specially built theatres called Koothu Maadom, usually situated within temple premises.
Tholpava Koothu performances begin late in the evening and continue until dawn, creating a mystical atmosphere that captivates audiences. The art form is prevalent in the central parts of Kerala, particularly in the districts of Palakkad, Thrissur, and Malappuram. However, it has become increasingly rare, with only a few families continuing the tradition.
The Krishnankutty Pulavar Memorial Tholpava Koothu and Puppet Centre is named after the late Krishnankutty Pulavar, a master of this art form, and is one of the few remaining institutions actively preserving and promoting Tholpava Koothu. The title "Pulavar" signifies a master or scholar, reflecting the deep respect and expertise associated with this art.
At the helm of the center is Mr. K. K. Ramachandra Pulavar, the eldest son of Krishnankutty Pulavar, who leads the troupe and trains new artists in the traditional methods of Tholpava Koothu. The training includes not only the performance techniques but also the intricate process of making the puppets from animal hide, ensuring that the complete tradition is passed down to future generations.
Visiting the Krishnankutty Pulavar Memorial offers a unique opportunity to witness and understand the intricate art of shadow puppetry, from the meticulous preparations to the actual performance. The center serves as a vital hub for the preservation of this ancient ritualistic art form, allowing visitors and enthusiasts to connect with Kerala's rich cultural legacy and contribute to its sustenance.
