Kunchan Smarakam
Kunjan Nambiar, celebrated as the pioneer of Ottan Thullal, crafted this distinctive art form after being mocked for dozing off during a Chakyarkoothu performance. In response to the jest, he invented Ottan Thullal, a solo dance that melds classical elements with sharp satire, addressing contemporary issues through captivating and engaging narratives. This innovative art form has since become a revered treasure of Kerala’s cultural heritage.
The birthplace of this legendary artist, located in Killikurissimangalam, a quaint village in Lakkidi within the Palakkad district, has been transformed into a vibrant memorial known as Kunjan Smarakam. This lovingly preserved site honors Kunjan Nambiar’s legacy and offers visitors a deep dive into the rich cultural tapestry of Ottan Thullal.
Each year, the Kunjan Smarakam becomes a cultural epicentre during the Navarathri festival, which is celebrated with great zeal and splendour. The festival's festivities are a testament to the enduring impact of Kunjan Nambiar’s art and provide a spectacular showcase of traditional dance and music. The highlight of the year is the grand celebration of the poet’s birthday on May 5th, known as Kunchandinam. This day is marked by elaborate celebrations that attract visitors from near and far, offering a unique glimpse into the vibrant traditions surrounding Ottan Thullal.
Visiting Kunjan Smarakam allows you to immerse yourself in the legacy of Kunjan Nambiar while exploring the scenic beauty of Killikurissimangalam. The village’s tranquil surroundings and rich cultural backdrop offer a serene escape and an opportunity to experience Kerala’s artistic heritage in an authentic setting.
