From the legendary Karimeen Pollichathu (Pearl Spot fish wrapped in banana leaf and then grilled), the King of the Kuttanad cuisine - the Kuttanadu Tharavu curry (duck curry), kappa and meen curry (tapioca with fish curry), duck mappas (a preparation made with duck) and Kudampullliyitta meen curry (fish curry made with the addition of Malabar Tamarind) to kakka or freshwater clams roasted with grated coconut and spices every dish is a legacy in itself. Timeless recipes handed down to generations of food lovers.Â
To complete the experience do not forget to try out the local Kallu or toddy, a native alcoholic beverage that’s indigenous to the State. The beverage is extracted from the inflorescence of the coconut tree and served in clay pots. While the freshly extracted toddy is sweet and is called Madura Kallu, the fermented version is sour and more intoxicating.Â
Also renowned as the ideal place to witness the legendary ‘vallamkali’ or snake boat races of Kerala, Kuttanad is more than just a destination or a place to visit. It’s more of a way of life that celebrates nature, traditions and community living. The land offers each visitor a deeper understanding of what it means to live in harmony with the land and its waters.
