Malayala Kalagramam
Located approximately 29 km from Kannur in New Mahe, Malayala Kalagramam (MAKAM) is a renowned art and culture learning center that plays a pivotal role in nurturing the artistic talents of younger generations. Established in 2003 by the A. P. Kunhikannan Trust, the center is dedicated to preserving the cultural heritage of the Malabar region while providing a dynamic platform for artistic expression and education.
Malayala Kalagramam offers a diverse range of part-time and full-time courses in painting, sculpture, music, dance, and pottery. The center's curriculum also includes yoga and Sanskrit, fostering a holistic learning environment. The goal is to acquaint students with both classical and contemporary art trends, teach them the application and history of art, and help them incorporate these skills into their daily lives.
In addition to its educational programs, Malayala Kalagramam houses a Fraternity Centre that conducts seminars, symposia, extension lectures, in-service programs, and special projects across various fields of art and humanities. This artistic and intellectual hub is designed to inspire creativity and deepen the understanding of the arts.
The facilities at Malayala Kalagramam include a well-stocked library, an exhibition hall, an art gallery, a sculpture garden, an auditorium, cottages for staff and students, guesthouses for visitors, and a canteen. These amenities create an inspiring environment conducive to artistic growth. Visitors are welcome to observe classes with prior permission from the Director, allowing them to engage with the vibrant creative atmosphere.
The founder, Mr. A. P. Kunhikannan, a respected philanthropist, was honored with the prestigious “Ramashramam” award for his contributions. His vision for the center was to provide children and young people with a "Kalari" (stage) where they could practice and perform all forms of fine arts, ensuring the continuation of Kerala’s rich artistic traditions.
Malayala Kalagramam has become a magnet for art lovers and students alike, offering an enlightening experience for anyone who spends time amidst its tutors, students, and the extensive resources of its exotic library. The center's dedication to fostering creativity and preserving cultural heritage makes it a vital institution in Kerala's artistic landscape.
