The Veluthambi Dalawa Memorial Museum, located in Mannadi village within Pathanamthitta district, stands as a testament to the legacy of Veluthambi Dalawa, the Prime Minister of the former Travancore kingdom and a prominent figure in India's freedom struggle. Dalawa, who led a significant uprising against the British East India Company, spent his final days in Mannadi. To avoid capture, he ended his life at the Mannadi Pazhayakavu Devi Temple, which is now part of the memorial complex dedicated to his memory.
The museum, established on February 14, 2010, is managed by the Department of Archaeology and occupies a 1.27-acre site. It features a cultural complex with a pavilion housing a statue of Dalawa, a museum displaying replicas of key historical documents, including the famous Kundara Declaration, and an open-air theatre.
Visitors to the museum can explore various galleries that highlight the heroism of Dalawa and the cultural heritage of ancient Travancore. The open-air gallery displays portraits of Travancore’s rulers, from Anizham Thirunal Marthanda Varma to Sree Chithra Thirunal. The museum also houses artifacts such as a stone Buddha statue, ancient agricultural tools, cannons, and old military equipment. Additionally, there is a pictorial gallery dedicated to Dalawa's life and a numismatics gallery showcasing old coins.
The memorial grounds include a beautifully landscaped garden and a library. A notable feature within the complex is a shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva, reputedly destroyed by the British during their occupation.
The museum’s setting in Mannadi is historically significant as it was here that Veluthambi Dalawa, known for his fierce resistance against British rule, made his last stand. The complex serves not only as a historical site but also as a vibrant cultural hub, reflecting both the struggles of the past and the enduring legacy of one of Travancore's greatest freedom fighters.
Nearby attractions include Mavara Para, Karingalichal sightseeing spot, Adayappad Waterfall, Ayiravalli Para, and Munroe Island, making the area rich in both historical and natural interest.
