Mannur Shiva Temple
The exquisitely carved Mannur Shiva Temple, located 18 kilometres away from Kozhikode city, in Kadalundi village, is an architectural marvel and a sanctuary of peace and spiritual abode. The 200-year-old Gajaprathishta (elephant)-styled laterite edifice is a stunning example of traditional Kerala architecture.
Natural Surroundings
As you enter the area, the first thing that you notice is the breathtaking natural beauty surrounding this sacred site. Set in a tranquil environment, under the shade of old trees, the temple is a testament to the harmonious relationship between spirituality and nature.
History and Architecture
The unique two-level sanctum sanctorum is built in traditional Kerala style, featuring intricate carvings and a distinctive style in the shape of the rear side of an elephant (Gajaprathishta). The temple foundation is made up of granite with 16 pillars. The red laterite stone walls are beautifully carved, exuding an earthy charm.
Myths and Legends
According to legend, the Mannur Shiva temple is one of the 108 Shiva temples built by Parashurama, the sage who is credited with the creation of land between Gokarna and Kanyakumari by divine power or “Leela”.
Devotees believe Parasurama began his work on Shivalinga Prathishta (Installation) at Tiruvannur, famous for another Shiva temple, and completed at Mannur, creating a sacred corridor of spiritual energy. That’s why the noon poojas at Mannur Shiva temple is very special.
Principal deity
Lord Shiva is the principal deity in the elephant-style (Gajaprathishta) sanctum sanctorum, depicted as Aghoramurthy, the angry form of Shiva after the Dakshayaga.
In southeast corner of the temple there is a separate shrine for Goddess Parvati. There is also Vishnu temple on the north side.
Dakshina Murthy and Ganapathy are the other deities in the temple. Mahavishnu temple, Chuttambalam, Sastha temple and Karinkali Kavu are the other features of the shrine. The Upadevatas (deities) in the Mahavishnu temple are Ganapathy and Ayyappan.
Shivarathri and Thiruvathira are the major festivals celebrated here.
