Water Museum and Biopark
The Water Heritage Museum and Biopark in Kozhikode, located in Kunnamangalam, is a unique initiative by the Centre for Water Resources Development and Management (CWRDM) dedicated to honoring and preserving one of the most vital natural resources—water. This museum and biopark serve as a reminder of the integral role water plays in sustaining life, from our bodies to the ecosystems that surround us. The museum's exhibits, which include sculptures, pictures, and still life displays, have been carefully crafted by painters, sculptors, and other artists using materials such as clay, hay, plastic, plaster of Paris, and even waste materials, to convey the importance of water conservation.
Visitors to the museum are welcomed by a Padipura, a traditional gateway commonly found in aristocratic Kerala households, setting the tone for a journey that intertwines cultural heritage with environmental awareness. One of the first displays features a depiction of a Kerala woman drawing water from a well, emphasizing the cultural and religious significance of water in daily life. The museum also highlights key historical landmarks in Kerala's relationship with water, such as the Canoli Canal, which contributed to the state's commercial development, and the Idukki Hydroelectric Project.
The museum also explores the traditional agrarian practices of Kerala, with exhibits on Pokkali farming, coir making, lime shell harvesting, and other sustainable agricultural methods that have been part of Kerala's history for centuries. Additionally, the museum honors River Nila, also known as Bharathapuzha, which has inspired numerous literary works and holds a special place in the hearts of Keralites.
The Water Museum and Biopark is not just a tribute to water but also a powerful educational tool that underscores the importance of water conservation. It reminds visitors that water is a fundamental building block of life and that its preservation is crucial for the well-being of current and future generations. The museum's exhibits are designed to instill a deeper appreciation for water and to encourage responsible stewardship of this precious resource.
