Neendakara
In the district of Kollam, 8 kilometres from the city, is the Neendakara Beach, known far and wide for its fishing harbour. City dwellers rarely do ever have the chance to experience the quaint day to day activities of the simple village life, a break that is very much welcome for those from the busy cities and towns. One such example is that of the life the fishermen lead, working hard at the harbour, all smiles and rambunctious laughter, and thus did the fishing harbour turn into a tourist attraction.
It is not only the popular fishing village and harbour, however, that draws the attraction of tourists – the region is blessed with much scenic beauty, as it rests on the banks of the Ashtamudi Lake. A rather satisfying view of both the lake and the Arabian Sea can be seen from the Neendakara Bridge, the preferred vantage point in this region.
Historical Significance and Current Importance
In the times of the early 16th century, when the Portuguese settled in Kollam (Quilon, as they referred to it), their ships passed through the Neendakara bar, as recorded in history. Today, it is the site of the National 66 Highway, leading to Sakthikulangara across the lake known as Ashtamudi.Â
The fishing village has been part of the fishing trade since ancient times. It’s impressive and yet it was an eventuality that it continues to play an important role in the fishing trade.
Today, it is an important seaport, with the capability of harbouring more than 500 fishing boats at the same time. It is also the headquarters of the renowned Indo-Norwegian Fisheries Community project, originating in the year 1953, and currently under the Kerala Government since 1961. The Fisherman Training Institute, the boat building yard and the refrigeration plant at the port are the results of this project.
Tourist attractions
Tourists visit the Neendakara harbour with the idea of experiencing the beauty of the fishing harbour, with the fresh sea breeze gently blowing against one’s face, the boats in the distance and the Chinese Fishing Nets that stand against the background. The harbour also attracts people to experience firsthand the phenomenon of ‘chaakara’, something which occurs after the monsoons, bringing togethers the large schools of fish and the prawns off the coast.
The St. Sebastian Church of Neendakara is famous as well, and is also a place suggested as a destination during one’s time here. Built during the times of the Dutch, the annual festival hosted by the church is quite well known for parading the idols around with fervour and gusto.
If you are indeed a tourist visiting Neendakara fishing harbour, you must not forget to also step by the Neendakara beach, beautiful with its golden sand, blue skies and calming sea – a sight to behold in all its glory and bringing the peace that only beaches can bring.
