Pandipathu, a serene and secluded ecotourism spot located on the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border in the Thiruvananthapuram district, has been gaining popularity among nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers. Nestled within the Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary and accessible from the picturesque plantation site of Bonacaud, Pandipathu offers visitors a chance to escape the noise and chaos of urban life and immerse themselves in the raw, untamed beauty of nature.
The area is characterized by rolling grasslands and hillsides, which are home to the Indian Wild Buffalo, also known as the 'Gaur.' Recognizing the potential of this unique location, the Kerala Forest Department has introduced the 'Visit To Bison Abode' project, designed to provide visitors with an intimate experience of this natural haven. This two-day package is ideal for groups of up to eight people and includes guided tours and assistance from members of the forest department.
Participants in the 'Visit To Bison Abode' programme can look forward to a variety of activities, including trekking through the scenic landscape and enjoying a campfire under the stars. The package also covers food and accommodation, ensuring a comfortable and immersive experience in the heart of the sanctuary. However, visitors are required to seek permission in advance and register for the programme through the Wildlife Assistant Warden of Peppara Sanctuary or the office of the Wildlife Warden in Thiruvananthapuram.
Pandipathu’s location within the Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary adds to its allure, offering a rich natural environment where visitors can observe the diverse flora and fauna of the region. The sanctuary itself is a haven for wildlife and is known for its placid lake, which is occasionally disturbed by the sight of raptors diving for prey, and the lush greenery that lines its banks.
Historically, the area around Pandipathu was frequented by English plantation owners during the colonial era, who established tea and coffee estates in nearby places like Braimore, Ponmudi, Bonacaud, and Athirumala. The remnants of their travels, including old tracks and trails through the forest, can still be seen today, adding a touch of historical intrigue to the natural beauty of the area.
For those seeking a day out with family or friends, Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary, which houses Pandipathu, offers the perfect setting to relax and enjoy nature. Whether it's watching the serene lake, trekking through the forests, or simply basking in the tranquility of the surroundings, Pandipathu provides a unique and enriching experience that connects visitors with the natural world in a profound way.
