The Thekkekudi Cave Temple or Kaviyoor Rock Cut Temple, situated approximately 9 kilometers from Thiruvalla, in Kerala's Pathanamthitta district, is an archaeological site dating back to the 8th century AD. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this temple stands at 5 feet in height and is celebrated for its Pallava style of architecture, rarely found in Kerala. The intricate stone carvings in the temple are believed to be the earliest specimens of stone sculpture in Kerala. The site gives a glimpse into the artistic and religious practices of Kerala.
The temple is open every day from 5 to 11 in the morning and 5 to 7 in the evening.
Gable Style Architecture
The temple's design is famous for its Gable style architecture.  It is an architectural style featuring two sloping sides that meet at the top in a triangular shape with a peak. The exclusive design attracts historians from different parts of the state who come to explore its ancient roots and artistic heritage.
Deities of the Temple
The main deity is Lord Shiva in the form of a Shivalinga. Near the idol of the main deity, you can find idols of Lord Ganesha, Dwarapalakas, and Mahirshi (a member of the highest order of ancient Indian sages). A Dvarapala or Dvarapalaka is the guardian of a door or gate often portrayed as a warrior or a giant, usually armed with a weapon. The dvarapala statue is a widespread architectural element throughout Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain cultures.
