Thunchan Memorial
Thunchan Memorial, located at Thunchan Parambu in Tirur, Malappuram district, is a revered site dedicated to Thunchath Ezhuthachan, the father of the Malayalam language. This historically significant place is the birthplace of the 16th-century poet, who is celebrated for rendering the great epics, the Mahabharata and the Ramayana, in his distinctive poetic style. Ezhuthachan's works not only enriched Malayalam literature but also popularized the writing system that became the current Malayalam alphabet.
The serene and culturally rich environment of Thunchan Parambu makes it a popular destination, especially during Vijayadashami, when it becomes the focal point for the Vidyarambham ceremony. This ritual, also known as Ezhuthiniruthu, marks the initiation of young children into the world of letters, and is led by eminent literary personalities.
Thunchan Memorial Trust and Research Centre, established to preserve and promote the legacy of Ezhuthachan, boasts several facilities. These include the Saraswathi Mandapam, a granite structure dedicated to the goddess of knowledge, an auditorium with a seating capacity of 500, an open-air stage, guest cottages, a dormitory, a dining hall, and two ponds. The centre is also recognized as a research hub by the University of Calicut, attracting students and scholars interested in Malayalam and Sanskrit literature. The research library here houses a collection of around 15,000 books and 120 manuscripts, supported by computer and internet facilities.
In 2001, under the leadership of the legendary writer M.T. Vasudevan Nair, the Thunchan Memorial Trust was formed to expand the activities and preserve the vision and values of the great poet. The National Manuscript Mission has designated the Trust as a Manuscript Resource Centre, responsible for surveying, documenting, and electronically reporting manuscripts from North Kerala.
A key attraction of the Thunchan Memorial is the Literary Museum, established in October 2008. It is the only museum of its kind dedicated to the evolution of the Malayalam language, featuring visual clippings, soundtracks, paintings, and photographs that depict the different stages of the language's development.
The annual Thunchan festival, held during the first week of February, is a major cultural event that draws writers, scholars, and cultural enthusiasts from across the country. The five-day festival features literary seminars, poetry readings, cultural discourses, dance, and music performances. A highlight of the festival is the grand procession of the iron stylus used by Ezhuthachan to write his poems.
