Velliyamkallu
Velliyamkallu, which translates to the silvery white stone, is a two-acre rocky island in the Arabian Sea approximately 14 km from Payyoli in Kozhikode district of Kerala. Velliyamkallu offers picturesque views of the Arabian Sea and is a popular spot for watching the sunset.
The island is full of sharp rocks as well as small and deep caverns. There are deep wells inside some of these caverns. A plaque on the island proclaiming it as the property of the Government of India is the only man-made thing in the island.
Historical Significance
Velliyamkallu is renowned for its historical association with Kunjali Marakkar, the naval commander of the Zamorins who fiercely resisted the Portuguese. The massive rock served as a strategic vantage point for Marakkar’s naval operations against Portuguese ships and many of the rocks here bear marks of cannon ball attacks. In the final encounter with the Zamorins when the Portuguese conquered the area, they threw the protestors from the Velliyamkallu rocks into the sea. This island is therefore known as ‘Balikkallu’ which means Sacrificial Stone.
Boat ride to Velliyamkallu
Accessing Velliyamkallu requires a one-hour boat ride from Payyoli Beach. The Payyoli Beach is known for its shallow waters ideal for swimming and water sports. The boat ride from the beach to Velliyamkallu is adventurous but not recommended for children and senior citizens. Local people from fishing communities often assist visitors in making this trip.
Olive Ridley TurtlesÂ
During November and December, visitors to Payyoli Beach can see the Olive Ridley Turtles, also known as the Pacific sea turtles, coming in to the beach to lay eggs. Local fishermen operate a centre called ‘Theeram’ for the protection of these turtles.
Thikkodi Lighthouse which overlooks Velliyamkallu was built after a shipwreck, the remains of which can still be seen here. The lighthouse gives a good view of the coastline and the sea. Â
Moorad River, located nearby, is a great place for birdwatchers as you can see various local and migratory bird species throughout the year.
